68-year-old widower Alex Wallace of Bannockburn is living proof that carbon reduction can be achieved by individuals as well as community groups . He was nominated by GCNS assistant manager Angela Mitchell. Stirling folk currently on GCNS Carbon Cutter Plans would marvel at what Alex has been doing, without giving it a thought, for years. His early training as a grocer with the Co-Op in Fife has influenced his shopping habits and he gets his fruit and vegetables from a farm shop in West Stirlingshire. Alex says he "detests" plastic shopping bags. Back in his grocery shop days, most items were put into paper bags.
July 2010
DEDICATION and sheer hard work earned Sarah Fraser the accolade of being named as Green Champion for July 2010. She founded the Stepin Stones group and helped transform a bleak back court at 20-22 Lomond Crescent into a very pleasant garden area. In just over six months, she secured over £1000 in funding and galvanised community spirit in Cornton. Sarah was nominated by GCNS's Emily Harvey, who said: "I think Sarah is doing a super job, but this award is also a reflection of the support she has had from friends, neighbours, local groups, the council and, of course, the Stepin Stones team." June 2010

STIRLING'S Green Champion for June 2010 is Enterprise Rent-A-Car boss Karen Warrington. GCNS's Sarah Wiseman nominated Karen. "She has already achieved loads to reduce energy use," said Sarah, "and she has done a really good job of getting the people in the Stirling office to do Carbon Cutter Plan actions." Karen said that issues like sustainability have always been fairly straight forward to her. "It's just common sense to look after your environment," she said. "And it's really a win-win situation for the company because the energy savings can come right off our bottom line and help company profits."

Michael Adam, treasurer of St Ninians Old Parish Church, was nominated by Angela Mitchell of GCNS. "He has pursued almost a 'one man campaign' to reduce energy use in the church and was instrumental in helping us get GCNS Carbon Cutter Plans going. Indeed, they were the first church and the biggest community group to sign up."
April 2010

GOING Carbon Neutral Stirling's Green Champion for April is Borestone Primary teacher Gillian Wannan. Her enthusiasm for a host of eco-friendly projects at Borestone led her to be nominated by Emily Harvey of GCNS. However, Gillian was quick to point out that the real "champions" were the pupils themselves. "I'm just the facilitator, it's the children who have been doing all the work and coming up with all the ideas," she said.
