I'm the founder, and now manager of Going Carbon Neutral Stirling. I'd describe myself as having a historical background of thriftiness with natural resources, but never as an environmentalist. I learnt about climate change, by accident, in 2004, was stunned I'd never really heard about it – not to the extent of thinking about personally doing anything. What I read made me instantly give up my job in business growth and marketing to turn my full attention onto how to effectively communicate climate change to "other normal people in Scotland"– in a way that would lead a whole community to meaningful and sustained change. There weren't grants for this type of stuff then, so I worked initially 3 years as a fulltime volunteer on climate change, eventually pulling together the GCNS engagement model, which is now an exemplar of the Scottish Government. In terms of this project my key concerns include sustaining engagement, reducing the consumption of the affluent and ensuring the council make the right strategic decisions. I have 2 boys, Charlie (8yrs) and Tristan (9yrs) at St Ninians Primary School and chickens.
I'm responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the team as well as being the lead contact for Low Carbon Stirling a joint campaign with Stirling Council.
After graduating from Edinburgh University in 2005, I chaired the Edinburgh Campaign against Climate Change organising a large demonstration through Edinburgh. I then worked for Friends of the Earth Scotland and in 2006 left on a three-year round the world adventure travelling mainly by train, bus and boat to Australia, via Russia, Mongolia, China and Indonesia. I joined GCNS in January 2010.
I've lived in and around Stirling almost all my life and when I heard about Going Carbon Neutral Stirling I was very keen to be a part of the project. I'm strongly in favour of the practise of environmental and social justice, so supporting a model which can potentially bring about these kinds of improvements in the city and district is something important to me.
My job is to provide administrative support to the team to try and help everything run properly. I also write articles for the Stirling District press to raise awareness of what's happening with GCNS.
I have lived in the Stirling area for 7 years. Before working with GCNS I was Education Officer for RSPB Scotland. During that time I became more aware of the impacts of climate change on the natural world and the fact that we need to do something about it. So joining GCNS was a natural next step - and it also reduced my own carbon footprint as I cut out the commute to Edinburgh! I currently work two days a week.
